Empower Economic Prosperity and Diversity During Black Business Month
By Toni Harrison
August is Black Business Month, a time to recognize and further enable invaluable contributions of Black entrepreneurs, innovators, and business leaders. The month-long commemoration highlights the importance of supporting and elevating Black-owned businesses. Fostering economic empowerment, and advancing equitable opportunities within the marketplace to enable prosperity and positive social change must be a priority year-round, however.
Recognizing Black Entrepreneurship
Among its purposes, Black Business Month provides a platform to recognize the resilience, creativity, and entrepreneurial determination of Black business leaders. Trailblazers, like Mellody Hobson and Sheila Johnson, who have triumphed over historical adversities and systemic challenges to create successful ventures that contribute to the growth of their communities and the economy at large are amplified throughout the month. By celebrating their accomplishments, in spite of the historic inequities that still exist today, we shed light on their invaluable role in driving necessary change and economic progress.
Supporting Economic Empowerment
The purpose of Black Business Month goes beyond mere recognition; it serves as a call to action for all consumers and businesses to actively support Black-owned entities. By choosing to support Black-owned businesses, we invest in economic empowerment and financial independence that benefits all corners of our society. These investments have a profound impact, generating jobs, wealth, and opportunities for current and future generations.
Advancing Diversity Equity, and Inclusion
Diversity Equity and Inclusion, or DEI, has become a trendy business buzzword. DEI is a critical strategic business imperative. It’s a powerful driver of innovation and improved performance. Advocating for a more inclusive and equitable landscape that values diverse perspectives and embraces multiculturalism is paramount to our economic and social landscape. By fostering an environment where historically marginalized communities have equitable opportunities, we enrich the business landscape with fresh ideas, creativity, and perspectives that benefit society and move everyone forward.
Amplifying Black Voices
While it is always appropriate for Black entrepreneurs to share our stories, challenges, and triumphs, our voices are amplified in August because of Black Business Month. Let’s leverage the increased visibility to advance our businesses, and to promote the unique experiences and perspectives we bring to the table. By elevating our voices in August and beyond, we can break down barriers, dispel stereotypes, and build bridges of understanding, connection, and respect.
Collaborating for Lasting Impact
Black Business Month also encourages collaboration between Black-owned businesses, corporate entities, government agencies, and local communities. Forging strategic partnerships can work to create a powerful ecosystem to spur economic growth, nurture talent, and cultivate a sense of collective responsibility in driving sustainable change.
As we celebrate Black Business Month, let us embrace the transformative power of economic empowerment and equity, cultural diversity, and widespread inclusion. Supporting and uplifting Black-owned businesses creates economic opportunities that work to fuel a more just and equitable society.
Together, we can build a future where Black entrepreneurs can thrive, innovate, and inspire, creating a business landscape that enables equity, powers progress, and amplifies diverse voices of all. While it will take more than one month to make it happen, our collective efforts during Black Business Month are poised to have a resounding impact far beyond August.
