From the ashes of segregation to the heights of economic empowerment, the journey of Black entrepreneurs is one of resilience, creativity, and determination.
A Historical Journey
The roots of Black Business Month can be traced back to the early 19th century, a period when free Black entrepreneurs and business owners faced tremendous challenges in a deeply segregated and racist society. Despite the obstacles, enterprising Black individuals established businesses, ranging from small shops and restaurants to skilled trades. Notable pioneers like Madame C.J. Walker, the first self-made female millionaire in America, paved the way for generations of Black entrepreneurs.
The idea of dedicating a month to celebrate Black businesses gained traction in the 2000s when Black activists and business leaders sought to highlight the achievements and economic contributions of the Black community. In 2004, historian John William Templeton and engineer Frederick E.
